The educated homeless
No less than 14% of homeless people have followed higher education and 10% are graduates, according to a study by INSEE and the National Institute of Demographic Studies (INED) published Wednesday, September 28. The work is based on a census conducted in January and February 2012 in accommodation centers, hotels, maternal centers, food distribution sites and food banks. The number of people deprived of a personal home was, at the time, estimated at 143 000, including 30 100 children. It had already jumped 50% compared to the previous survey, dating from 2001, with a very strong surge of families, especially foreign. These data have only got worse since then. This year, most cities around Europe say that they shelter on average 80 000 people every night.
For the two authors of the study, the demographer Philippe Cordazzo and the sociologist Nicolas "the phenomenon of declassification extends to different societies and diplomas no longer protect from precariousness".
