Donna

Today I met a homeless woman named Donna, she has been living on the streets for 3 weeks. I sensed that my being a women too, allowed her to feel more at easy about her story.
The reason why she is homeless today, is abuse. She escaped a 13 year long abusive relationship that left her numerous times at the emergency room.
She said something that really marked me, "at least now I am finally safe". A woman on her own, new to the homeless life and with no one looking out for her, she felt safer around the outcasted, high risk lifestyle society than in the structurally accepted safety of a relationship and a home.

She was so rational and her head was clear, she was ready for this new challenge and kind of saw it as the inevitable alternative to her situation, which baffled me.
By breaking away from her emotional and physical abuse, she has decided to relieve her imprisonment, put her wellbeing above a home address and risk a societal banishment, ultimately depreciating her human value as governed by our societal standards and expectations.
